Randall Slawson Sr. is an active member of the Charleston community and Co-founder of 5 Star Legacy Group. Born in Big Spring, Texas to a military family, he has had the pleasure of traveling around the world.
He graduated from Summerville High School and briefly attended Jacksonville State in Alabama before finishing his education at Baptist College of Charleston, now known as Charleston Southern.
Supporting those in need has been a long-time goal for Randall who credits his parents for igniting his passion to give back to the community. He's served as a behavior health tech for the last 15 years and is certified in verbal de-escalation, crisis management, CPR and CPI, as well as milieu management.
Randall proudly serves his community alongside his wife, Alicia. Together, they have two children, Jacqueline and RJ, and two grandchildren.
Nancey Palmer is the Co-founder of 5 Star Legacy Group who says she's truly found her calling through working with at-risk people in her community. Nancey has more than 25 years of experience in non-violent crisis management and working with adults and children who have mental health disabilities.
She graduated with an associate degree in applied science from Trident Technical College and has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Marist University. She also holds certifications in CPR and milieu management.
As a licensed foster parent, she recognizes that helping a person succeed in life begins with nurturing and supporting them in their adolescence. She believes that everyone will need a helping hand at some point in life and that we all have the responsibility to support one another and make the world a better place.
Alicia Slawson is a 28-year veteran of the Berkeley County Public Defenders Office who has spent nearly three decades helping people find employment opportunities and rehabilitation treatment.
As the secretary of 5 Star Legacy Group, she plans to utilize her professional experience to ensure 5SLG fulfills its mission of meeting community needs.
Born in the Bronx, NY, Alicia moved to the Palmetto State when she was 12 years old. She graduated from Berkeley High School and received her bachelor's degree in science from Limestone College shortly after. She is married to Randall Slawson Sr. with whom she shares two children and two grandchildren.
Sharmane Nelson-Bland was born and raised in New York City and prides herself for overcoming the statistics of being a teenage mother. As a single mother of three at the time, Sharmane says she faced many obstacles and setbacks while trying to finish her education, but she didn't let that deter her from accomplishing her goals and creating a better life for her children.
While living in New York, she received an associate degree in liberal arts and worked in community outreach as a family support advocate for over 5 years before relocating to South Carolina in 2007. She continued working in the administrative field, coordinating housing assistance for people seeking assisted living and placement in long-term care facilities.
In addition to serving as the administrative assistant and community outreach coordinator for 5 Star Legacy Group, she is also the founder of the Darrian T. George Foundation for Dream Chasers — a nonprofit organization created in honor of her son.
She plans to use her fundraising, event planning and networking skills to support 5SLG in creating a more resourceful community and bettering the lives of others.
Jacqueline Smith is a born leader. As the eldest child in her family, she learned early on what it means to lead by example and do what's best for herself and her community.
Jacqueline was born in Charlotte, NC, but grew up in the lowcountry. After high school, she attended the University of South Carolina, Columbia where she received her bachelor's degree in public health. She pursued a degree in public health because of her grandparents who were both diagnosed with diabetes. She wanted to learn more about how she could better aid their needs and others who are diabetics.
Jacqueline serves on the marketing team with 5 Star Legacy Group and plans to use her professional and personal life experience to spread the word about 5SLG's mission and garner support from like-minded groups and individuals. She currently owns and operates a trucking company with her husband, Darnell Sr. Together, they have two sons, Darnell Jr. and Darrian.
Darryl Palmer was born and raised in South Carolina. As one of five children, growing up in a large family taught him the value of putting the needs of others before his own. He also credits his years as a student athlete for teaching him discipline, empathy and how to cohesively work with others to accomplish a goal.
He graduated Cum Laude from South Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in sports management. After college, he played professional basketball overseas in various countries, including the United Kingdom, Albania and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Experiencing the cultures of the many countries that he's traveled to has reinforced the his personal values of caring for his community and working with others to achieve success —values that underscore the mission of 5 Star Legacy Group.
